Changes Not Discussed Changes Not Discussed Significant revisions to the first American edition of Moby-Dick—found in the Harper’s New Monthly Magazine version of Ch. 54 (H), the first British edition (B), the Northwestern-Newberry edition (NN), and this edition (LCRE)—are discussed in the LCRE revision narratives. Thirty-one narratives appear in the text of Moby-Dick, near the relevant revision sites (see List of In-Text Revision Narratives for an index of these narratives); and over three hundred other sites are discussed in the revision narratives in Making Moby-Dick. Listed below are over 550 additional revision sites too numerous to be discussed in this edition. Readers may inspect these changes (“variants”) in context, and devise revision narratives of their own. (A website for sharing narratives is under consideration.) In this list of changes not discussed (which includes authorial and editorial revisions as well as undiscussed NN and LCRE emendations), a vertical bar (|) separates the American edition text on the left from its variant on the right; the bracketed abbreviations following a variant indicate the variant’s appearance in one or more of the versions indicated above. Dropped letters or broken type are represented with braces ({}). Accordingly, the entry Rokovoko | Kokovoko [B, NN, LCRE] indicates that the word “Rokovoko” in the American edition was changed to “Kokovoko” in the British, and that this variant was then adopted as an emendation by both the NN and LCRE editions. In the following list, all LCRE emendations appear to the left of the vertical bar (|) with the original American text indicated to the right. In almost all cases the LCRE emendations are based on corrections found in the first British edition. The abbreviations in brackets ([]) following an emendation indicate, where applicable, the earlier appearance of that variant in one or a combination of the versions listed below. Dropped letters or broken type in words found in the American and British versions are represented with braces ({}). Forty-four of the LCRE emendations appeared for the first time in the 1988 NN edition, and eight appear in LCRE without textual precedent. Most LCRE emendations are non-controversial; however, those that affect meaning are listed in boldface and are discussed in a revision narrative either in the text of Moby-Dick or in Making Moby-Dick. Accordingly, the entry left [B, NN] | lift indicates that the emended word “left” in the LCRE text, which is also found in the British edition and was adopted as an emendation in the NN edition, originally appeared as “lift” in the American edition. Because the entry is in boldface, a revision narrative discussing the word has been provided (in this case in Making Moby-Dick).
